There's nothing worse than those big eyes giving you 'that look', the one we all know, as you leave the house on the weekend. When it comes to planning your weekend wandering, brunch bookings or scheduling lazy lunches, we all know one of our first thoughts tend to be, "can I bring my dog (or cat)?". Unfortunately, the answer is usually no.

At Fremantle Animal Hospital our pets are family, so we want to make sure while strolling through the streets, stopping for a coffee and a chat, that the whole family can join in - the two and four-legged members! Just as having a social life is great for our wellbeing and mental health, the same goes for your pet. Sitting curbside with your pet helps increase the bond you have with them while also helping them with their training and socialisation & interaction skills. Not sure your pet will sit still? If you're worried about taking them on the social scene, start with small steps. Something as simple as strolling past a pet-friendly café gives them (and you!) an idea of what to expect.

We’re on a mission to make Fremantle more pet-friendly; we want to see more pooches hitting the pavement. Also, Fremantle Animal Hospital has developed some great stickers for participating businesses to place in their windows (inside and outside, or outside only), allowing people and pups to easily identify fur-friendly options - just let us know if you would like one for your business.

A 2019 survey conducted by Mars Petcare showed that businesses who welcomed pets saw increased foot traffic and greater repeat patronage. With 35% of respondents wishing they could take their pets with them to cafés and restaurants. With pets by their side, owners are also less likely to rush off worried about their pets being at home alone. The best part is, making your café pet friendly is as simple as adding some water bowls and perhaps a cheeky jar of treats on the counter!
